Email from Don Collyer to Formula Vee interested people April 2024
Good Evening
I write to you as an enthusiastic and interested party in Historic Formula Vee, and wanted to update regarding numerous items. I compiled an email list from a number of sources and this email follows on from a similar one I sent later last year. I wish to note that I am a committee member of HFVAA and HSRCA.
Racing
The first major meeting for historic cars in 2024 was the Phillip Island event 6 – 10 March where a good field of our cars competed although combined in the same races with Group J, K and L cars. The racing appeared to be great from trackside reports, and unlike previous events where the different groups of cars “frustrated” each other. Again, the HFVAA had their pop-up tent well placed in the paddock to promote the cause!
However, an aim for our racing activities is to have standalone fields for Group V and accordingly a priority for HFVAA is to increase the numbers of cars especially in NSW and Victoria where this is potentially more easily achieved. Certainly, in NSW there are enough cars to form grids and in Victoria the numbers are getting close. Other states are more difficult at this time. Accordingly, we are encouraging all parties to get their vehicles onto the track to support full standalone grids, and have an enjoyable time competing with others interested in our cars.
The HFVAA committee is introducing a pointscore whereby there will be four targeted events for our members to compete over the year, with the points tally determined over three events. This will be expanded in following years.
For 2024 the targeted events are:-
27 – 28 April Morgan Park HRRC Queensland
25 – 26 May Winton Short Historic Winton Austin 7 Club
28 – 29 September One Raceway HSRCA
30 November – 1 December SMSP GP HSRCA
Only HFVAA members will be able to compete for points, so again encouraging interested parties to join the club.
Cars For Sale
From my previous email I received responses from people wanting cars and with cars to sell. Wanted to keep this dialogue going as we have been able to move a number of cars to new owners.
Do you have a car you would like to move on to someone wanting to race in Historic Formula Vee? Would be keen to know if there are further cars available – please contact me by return email.
There are some known cars available at this time including Elfin NG, Mako, Nota and Rennmax. Some are complete going, desirable cars whilst others are project vehicles. Again, send an email if you are interested to know more.
The intention is obviously to get cars that might be sitting idle in sheds out onto the track with the current owners, or get them on to new custodians.
Group V Extension
There has been ongoing chat re the extension of the current Va and Vb categories. The HFVAA is committed to looking into this further as the accredited Motorsport Australia body for Historic Formula Vee. A questionnaire will be sent out soonest to financial members of the association although input is welcome from interested parties.
Rennmax Celebration
The HSRCA is promoting a celebration of Rennmax cars at an upcoming June meeting, with Bob Britton, the manufacturer, agreeing to be in attendance. Numerous Mk1 and Mk11 Formula Vee cars were produced with many still competing. Please contact me to learn more of this event and how you can be involved with your Rennmax car.
NSW State Championship Rounds
FVANSW has invited historic cars to run with current spec 1600 and 1200 cars at NSW MA State Championship Rounds, and score points in the 1200 championship. Great opportunity for extra track time and variety in the configurations to be run at SMSP, and day / night meetings. Some of us have run our cars at these meetings and the racing was very good!
